A day of culmination of dreams, meeting of hearts, discharging of a father's important responsibility, and a day of joy, celebrations and feast.Yes June 5th 2011 the day of wedding of my daughter symbolised all that and more.
It symbolised our love to our dear children, it portayed the affectionate sentiments of the siblings, it denoted the matured handling of important events by a loving (still child like in many aspects ) brother, it stood testimony to the understanding of both sides, it also conveyed the most important message that when people decide to sit and approach the issues, every obstacle can be removed and ultimate bliss and peace can be brought about.
The week from June first passed with the speed of a lightning.Receiving the guests, making in house arrangements for their stay, umpteen number of visits to Choultry to take care of all loose ends(despite which still there were loose ends is another story !!),preparing for the day of reception, taking care of logistics, ensuring the comfort of all visitors to the best possible extent, making arrangements for stay at night, taking precautions to guard valuables and to shift the gift items back home and so on and so forth.Every one has got some thing to do or say added to the glitter.Normally i am a person who enjoy such occasions to the hilt, but doing the role of a father is slightly different .Hence there were occasions when tempers were about to erupt which thanks to the presence of professor!!from Hongkong by myside and thanks to the Mr Cools from my office standing steadfast ner by were nipped in the bud itself.
And when the mind is reconciled and balanced every thing else goes smooth. Right from tolerable NADASWARAM, to some standard light music, to the team of surging visitors (which bore testimony to the warmth &friendship that me and my wife had cultivated all along),to the enjoyable and variety food with very good taste of each item (as appreciated by the guests -since by the time myself and my son returned to have the dinner on 4th night it was already nearing 12 midnight and very few items were left out and our hunger had already died down)to the photo sessions which were at the same time fun and frolic, every thing went on well with God's grace according to schedule. There were some minor aberrations, but fortunately of no major consequence. The weather GOD was kind and the weather was neither too warm nor too cool and made the comfort level stronger.
Fifth morning, the proceedings have commenced at 3 am itself. HARDLY any one who matters have slept the previous day. And when things were going in the right direction according to teh desire of all sleeplessness adds to the energy levels instead of being a drag on nerves. tIME BETWEEN 7.20 AM AND 7.30 AM , as one of my close friend remarked was real suspence. The mangalyam whhich was sent around for taking the blessings of elders was taking its own time to return back, the boy and girl who went to change their attire took their sweet time to change over, the purohits were racing against time at an express speed, chanting mantras, issuing directions, and performing many acts like a magician all at the same time and it was exactly at 7.27 am, the mangalyatharanam took place.By 7.30 pleasantries have been exchanged and thE BHATTACHARYAR from our KULA DEIVAM TEMPLE-KUDAVASAL SRINIVAR, was the first to bless the couple with Kovil malas and atchadai.then followed the rest.the moment was itched green in memory.the seed for the event was sowed exactly 18 months back when both my daughter and the mappillai respectively broke the news of their liking towards each other to the respective parents. Then it was a LONG WAITING PERIOD ON ACCOUNT OF VARIETY OF FACTORS AND THEIR PATIENCE HAD PAID DIVIDENDS AT LAST.
The proceedings then centred around, more of events with fun and laughter like nalangu, kasi yatra, pidi sutral, poriidal, arundathi parthal, ammi mithiththal , oonjal etc (not necessarily in that order). Then it was time to visit the local OPPILIAPPAN TEMPLE (as our initial desire was to have the marriage at o.koil, near kumbakonam)and when we returned,it was time to pack off and bid fare well to the couple to proceed to thiruvanna malai, place of mappillai's parents. It was at that moment i lost my balance to some extent and tears filkled my eyes when i bade fare well to them.My friends near by took cahrge of the situation and my co brother and brother in law drove me away for while to restore me nack to my normalcy.
God has been kind in many ways.Ensuring that the function went on smmothly, every body who travelled from different destinations came and went back safely, every elder's blessings were available to the couple and that the climate has not played any tantrums.(exactly after one day, there were copious rains with thunder and lightning lasting for almost 2 hours, almost at the same time when our reception was organised).Thru this column a great acknowledgement to ALMIGHTY AND ALL ELDERS/WELL WISHERS .YES MAARAIGES ARE MADE IN HEAVEN NO DOUBT, HEAVEN IS IN OUR HEARTS!
As parents we have fulfilled the wishes. AS GROWN UP ADULTS THEY SHOULD KNOW TO LEAD LIFE HAPPILY TO OUR SATISFACTION.And i will await for the next DDAY....
Incidentally 5th june will be remembered for two more things from my side.It is the day on which my cousin brother's son gotengaged to his fiancee at US, and it is the day of shastiapthapoorthy celebrations of another cosin;s son.THREE IN ONE!!MAY BE THIS DAY IS DESTINED TO CARVE OUT SPECIFIC DIRECTIONS TO THE PEOPLE NEAR AND EAR TO ME AND I WISH ALL THEIR LIVES TO BE PEACEFUL, HAPPY AND CONTENDED, WITH GOD'S GRACE.

ANY DAY CAN BE LAST DAY
TODAY IS ONE OF THE DAYS WHICH TERRIFIED ME, SHOCKED ME AND LEFT ME SPEECHLESS.
THE NEWS OF DEATH OF MY NEPHEW, HARDLY IN HIS FORTIES, STRUCK ME LIKE A BULLET.
HE HAD SUFFERED A MASSIVE HEART ATTACK AND LEFT THE EAERTH TO HIS HEAVENLY ABODE, EVEN WHILE SLEEPING.
VERY FEW ARE FORTUNATE TO HAVE A DEATH IN SLEEP AND HE WAS ONE.BUT IN THE PROCESS HE LEFT A WHOLE LOT , HIS WIFE, HIS SON HARDLY 5YEARS OLD AND HIS MOTHER , FATHER AND BROTHERS IN A TOTALLY SHATTERED PLATFORM .
HE WAS WITH US HARDLY 10 DAYS BACK,CRACKING JOKES, MAKING FUN, DISCUSSING THE FUTURE PLANS, SINGING OLD HINDI SONGS (IN HIS RICH VOICE WHICH ALWAYS TAKE YOU TO DAYS OF MOHD RAFI/KISHORE KUMAR)ESPECIALLY THHE ONES FROM THE EVER GREEN TABLOID “ARADHANA.”
THE MORE I COME TO THINK OF IT, THE MORE IT LOOKS LIKE A DREAM AND NOT A REALITY.AND MORE I THINK OF MY SISTER WHO HAD BEEN SUFFERING ON ONE COUNT OR THE OTHER FOR THE PAST 7 YEARS OR SO THIS COULD BE THE MOST RAVAGING HIT, WHICH SHE CERTAINLY DID NOT DESERVE.
TIME AND AGAIN WE GO INTO PHILOSOPHICAL MOODS AND UNDERSTAND THAT “ANY DAY CAN BE THE LAST DAY OF HUMAN LIFE”.STILL WHEN THE LAST DAY COMES, IT LEAVES US BAFFLED AND SHATTERED.
AS IF TO ASSUAGE MY HURT FEELINGS I CAME ACROSS AN ARTICLE.WHICH APTLY DESCRIBES HOW TO FACE THE LAST DAY(IF ONLY YOU RECOGNISE IT TO BE THE LAST DAY).SOME EXCERPTS FROM THE SAME :

‘DO WORRIES, TENSION, NASTINESS,OR NEGATIVITY MAKE ANY SENCE KNOWING VERY WELL THAT ONE OF THESE DAYS CAN BE THE LAST DAY OF OUR LIFE? MIGHT AS WELL FILL IT WITH CELEBRATIONS, MUSIC, DANCE, USEFULNESS TO OTHERS AND POSITIVITY.IF THE END IS INEVITABLE ATLEAST LET US MAKE IT BEAUTIFUL.LET US TREAT EACH DAY WITH A SMILE AND LET US BE SWEET,PATIENT, LOVING, CARING PURE, BLISSFUL AND ACCOUNTABLE.LET US LIVE TO MAKE THIS DAY AS OUR BEST DAY..AND THAT IS ALL LIFE IS ABOUT-A DAY AT A TIME.
LET US EXTEND THE SAME UNDERSTANDING TO OTHERS TOO., FOR ONE OF THESE DAYS WILL BE THEIR LAST DAY.LET US DEMONSRTATE ALL THE CARE, KINDNESS EMPATHY AND LOVE AND LET US DO IT WITH OUT ANY THOUGHT OF EXPECATION BY WAY OF RECIPROCATION.AFTER ALL WILL ANY BODY BE EGOISTIC, OR THINK OF REVENGE OR TRY TO GET EVEN IF ONLY THEY KNOW THAT THE OTHER WILL BE GONE FOR EVER BY MIDNIGHT??TRULY WE DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME LEFT TO LOVE EACH OTHER.THEN WHERE IS THE TIME TO FIGHT AND HATE?

MY NEPHEW HAD BROUGHT SMILES WHEN EVER WE WERE TOGETHER .PROBABLY HE KNEW HOW TO LEAD HIS LIFE.BUT THE VERY THOUGHT OF HIM NOW FILLS ME WITH TEARS.LET HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE AND LET HIM GIVE HIS INDOMITABLE WILL,SWEET SMILES AND EVER INSPIRING CONVERSATION TO STAND BY THOSE WHO HAD LOST HIM FOR EVER.
I SIGN OFF WITH MY HEAD BOWED TO THE DEPARTED SOUL TO REST IN PEACE.

GONE ARE THE DAYS
Once in a Lifetime mail
When
The school reopened in June,
And we settled in our new desks and
benches!
When we queued up in book depot,
And got our new books
and notes!
When we wanted two Sundays and no Mondays, yet
managed to line up daily for the morning prayers.
We learnt writing with
slates and pencils, and
Progressed To fountain pens and ball pens and then Micro tips!
When we began drawing with crayons and evolved to
Color pencils and finally sketch pens!
When we started calculating
first with tables and then with
Clarke's tables and advanced to
Calculators and computers!
When we chased one another in the
corridors in Intervals, and returned to the classrooms
Drenched in sweat!
When we had lunch in classrooms, corridors,
Playgrounds,
under the trees and even in cycle sheds!
When all the colors in the world,
Decorated the campus on the Second Saturdays!
When a single P.T. period in the week's Time Table,
Was awaited more eagerly than the monsoons!
When cricket was played with writing pads as bats,
And Neckties and socks rolled into balls!
When few played
'kabadi' and 'Kho-Kho' in scorching sun,
While others simply played
'book cricket' in the
Confines of classroom!
Of fights but no conspiracies,
Of Competitions but seldom jealousy!
When we used to
watch Live Cricket telecast,
In the opposite house in Intervals and Lunch breaks!
When few rushed at 3:45 to
'Conquer' window seats in our School bus!
While few others had 'Big Fun', 'peppermint' ,
'kulfi', ' milk ice !' and 'sharbat !' at 4o Clock!
Gone are the days
Of Sports Day,
and the annual School Day ,
And the one-month long
preparations for them.
Gone are the days
Of the stressful Quarterly,
Half Yearly and Annual Exams, And the most
enjoyed holidays after them!
Gone are the days
Of tenth and twelfth standards, when
We Spent almost the whole year writing revision tests!
We learnt,
We enjoyed,
We played,
We won,
We lost,
We laughed,
We cried,
We fought,
We thought..
With so much fun in them, so many friends,
So much experience, all this and more!
Gone are the days
When we used
to talk for hours with our friends!
Now we don't have time to say a `Hi'!
Gone are the days
When we played games on the road!
Now we
Code on the road with laptop!
Gone are the days
When we saw stars Shining at Night!
Now we see stars when our code doesn't Work!
Gone are the days
When we sat to chat with Friends on grounds!
Now we chat in chat rooms....... !
Gone are the days
Where we
studied just to pass!
Now we study to save our job!
Gone are the days
Where we had no money in our pockets and still fun filled on our hearts!!
Now we have the atm as well as credit card but with an empty heart!!
Gone are the days
Where we shouted on the road!
Now we don't shout even at home
Gone are the days
Where we got lectures from all!
Now we give lectures to all... like the one I'm doing now....!!
Gone are the days
But not the memories, which will be
Lingering in our hearts for ever and ever and
Ever and ever and ever .....
Gone are the Days.... But still there are lot more Days to come in our Life!!
NO MATTER HOW BUSY YOU ARE ,
DONT FORGET TO
LIVE THE LIFE THAT STILL
EXISTS...... ...

FROM DARJILING TO SHIMLA
I had always been a nature's person.Let me amplify stating that i feel like a child, full of bliss and devoid of any sorrows whnever i am cuddled in the lap of the nature.
Be it sea side , be it a mountain side or be it a forest ..what they call in tamil as Neithal, Kurinchi,Mullai etc.. i feel that the nature's abundance and beauty make me smile and get immersed in its vast expanse.
Some of these places i have visited in the company of my wife , some of them in the company of my family, some others in the company of my friends and some of them alone. Whether i have travlled alone or in the company of some one is unimportant. What is important is that every such visit energised me and enthused me to face life in better perspectives.
Time and again these visits have proved one thing..the smallness of human being, in the presence of the natures' vastness.Viz Huge mountains, the thick forests and the deep blue seas. These are places which are less traversed and conseqently less habitated and therefore less polluted.I did not mean the pollution of air and water . I mean the pollution of minds. Where the mind is held high and where the senses are supreme, the words and deeds strike harmony with each other resulting in peace of mind and bliss. Where there is no meet of the mind and heart, there results disharmony.
It is possibly the serenity of the place of vist, the peace in abundance witnessed there and the resultant calmness of mind which flows therefrom that makes such visits , worthy of remebrances.
It is almost 30 years back i have visited Darjeeling. The photostaken in black and white and the one taken in colour in an automatic camera, then of me and my wife(which has almost faded out making it difficult to understand who is male and who is female in that photo!!), the hot cups of tea which we gulped(no count on the numbers-as we have gone with out proper clothing to a hill resort)to keep us warm, the unsuccessful attempts that we made in the morning hours to get to see the peak of everest in the back drop of the golden Rising sun(due to continuous rains ), the trip that we had to Katmandu( Nepal) sneking across the borders, the visit to PASUPATHY NATH TEMPLE, THE pirated CDS we picked up at Rs 50 per CD in those years(Aradhana, HARE RAMA HARE KRISHNA are a few which i still remember for its clarity and the resilience taht these CDs had ) the heart beats which went fastert when we were stopped near a check post to check our belongings, the chappathis which we prepared at KOLKATTA to last atleast for 3 days of our stay, the paruppupodi combination with chappathi which we tried first at that point of time, the sweet nothings whispered and seldom understood then all linger in my memory at this point of time when i have visited Shimla.
Life has almost come a full circle as it would appear. From DARJILING in East to Shimla in North. Both places, i have been accompanied by my wife. The feelings and temparaments and the fulfillment levels have undergone a sea change over these 3 decades. There are of course places which we visited along with our children and surprisingly the visits have taken place with distinct precision . If 1980's witnessed our trip to Dargiling, 1990's saw our trip to OOTY, 2000's saw our trip to Kodikanal and again to OOTY, and the current decade, our recent trip to Shimla.
These visits are remembered for various factors and reasons. Some of them nice and some of them not so nice, But what is important is that the places perse have always left a soothing effect on mind and body and it is only the individual expectations and the feelings which at times created a blur. The best way therefore to rejoice a visit is to enjoy the moments as if we are born at that moment with out carrying any legacy from the past. Once we develop such an attitude to life, to shed our unwanted legacies, life becomes vibrant and bright.THERE IS A NEW LEAF/LEASE TO LIFE THAT generates in the process.

From a child to a mother
There are good times and bad times. These are basiclaly classified based on the events perse in one's own life and in lifves of those closer to one self. But if only some one sits back and analyse with out any prejudice, wisdom will be there to the effect that all times are good and it is the way we associste the events with it that changes the complexion.
The post and its contents are a reflection on the news of twin addition to my family circle. In the process i have become a grand father twice in a span of one minute, yes the arrival of twin sons to my co brother's daughter , one at 9.29 am and the other at 9.30 am, gave me those crowns. One , i am told looks like the mother, soft and chubby, while the other possibly reflects the father, cute, lean and mischivous.
It appears as if i have seen the mother of the twins herself as a kid only few days back.Yes at times decades appear like days and days appear like decades. All in life..and the life comes in circles. No doubt on that!!
Hardly 18 months back, i was extending a moral support along wih my wife to this mother of twins, blessing her for her desires to become fruitful. And in a span of 18 months she has become a mother , and the first one at that TO BE BLESSED WITH TWINS.
Having seen her in close quarters as a lovable daughter, an obedient child and an understanding/calm girl (in her teens) it is difficult to believe that she has now become a mother.A girl develops fast, they say compared to a boy, and it is something to be seen to be believed. And all said and done. i am sue that those twin kids are really blessed to have a mother like her, calm, cool and amiable...
MAY THE HEAVENS BLESSINGS BE SHOWERED ON THIS BEAUTIFUL FAMILY OF HERS EVERY SECOND..

JAYAKANTHAN VS SUJATHA
I have made it a continuing and a compulsive habit to read atleast for an hour before retiring to bed.I have always enjoyed reading books , but of late i ahve realised i am not giving the desired attention to the books and i am simply hurrying thru the reading instead of enjoying the reading.
And when i have consciously put brakes on the reading speed i ahve come to appreciate very many new dimensions which possibly i was not able to appreciate when i have given the first time reading.
Fortunately for me i have got two books of two great and favourite authors of mine ..One by Jayakanthan(HIS KURU NAVALGAL) and the other by Sujatha (His collection of short stories. The fact that they belong to two different styles each of which is great in its own way added to the reading comfort and taste.
As some one remarked if good books were by your side, your time passes off in a grand manner and the books stand as friends to offer you solutions to your problems too.(Please do not misunderstand that one should read books for the purpose of finding solutions to their problems, it may be an incidental benefit, the main benefit is that you are able to talk to those characters and imbibe their vibrations and to that extent your focus gets sharpened and your way of reacting becomes balanced).
Jayakanthan since my child hood had been my favorite and when i reached my teenage, Sujatha's writings attracted me with equal force. If JAYAKANTHAN'S novels portray the
hidden side of human mind and life and also attempts to go for its solutions , Sujatha's stories invariably are fast paced, touch any thing and every thing that you can imagine to happen in a day to day life and ends with some unexpected twist. While JAYAKANTHAN'S narrations are meant to make you sit and do a self analysis, Sujatha's stories are more factual, do not make you feel guilty , but make you understand that there are two sides to the same coin.Jayakanthan's narration invariably have the slight tone of communism as its thread while Sujatha's stories keep the coomon mand and his weaknesses / strengths as its core .While JAYA KANTHAN;S writings make you feel dazed and shaken up for a while, Sujatha's stories are a way of satirical commentary and leaves its imprints with out feeling disturbed.
Now come to some of their classics..Jaya AKANTHAN'S Yarukkaga Azhudhan, Sila nerangalil sila manithrgal, Kokila enna seithu vittal, Agni pravesam, Adum narkaligal adugindrana, Kagitham ottappatta jannalgal are some of the stories which keep giving you diffrent meanings at each poit of time you read them. In other words your appreciation enlarges with each passing year.
For Sujatha, KARAI ELLAM SENBAGAPPOO, Oru thuli raththam,VASANT Ganesh DETECTIVE SERIALS, umpteen number of short stories including some unforgettable ones like
Sujatha ezhudum kathai, thedal, koonthal, oru latcham puththagangal, iru kadithangal, juno, Kuthirai etc portray the variety and ease with which he has touched subjects and made an impact on the readers.
With hardly a couple of days remaining for Pongal festival to bring cheers , enthusiasm and vasantham in every one's life, my best wishes for an wonderf ul and happy pongal

HAPPY READING TIMES AHEAD TO EVERY ONE OF YOU.

A TRIBUTE TO TEACHERS
I do not know at this juncture, whom i should recall from my memories to honour them on this day devoted to Gurus, and i indeed feel guilty that i have not done it all along in the span of last 58years.My son is a guru, to me at this moment and the first heart felt thanks to him , for having reminded me about my omission, by his post, which is a classic tribute to his teachers.
And coming to the word "Guru", is it confined to only teachers(School, college etc0 or does it extend beyond that.To me before broaching on this issue let me place my gratitude to my teachers who made me what i am to day...
It goes back to Sita teacher(SRI DEVI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL), who took care of me during my first years of schooling, and in the same breath i must acknowledge my other teacher(my own sister Jayam)who with out teaching any thing, lives day in and day out as a role model to be pursued .
Then the memory lane takes me to the next important teacher of my life, who taught me the values of life, a strong belief system in God,self confidence by identifying, accepting and making me a leader to lead various debates, classes etc , who taught me mathematics and English and made me to secure state rank and a school first rank in my school.MANY OF THE VALUES IN LIFE WHICH I HOLD EVEN ON DATE , I OWE it to Sri Vijayaraghavachariar(RAMA KRISHNA MISSION HIGH SCHOOL-North branch).
My college days brought me back the passion for English language as well as Tamil langauge, and since then they were my two eyes. The ease and expertise with which i was able to handle the behavoural science classes ,in both languages , simultaneously later in my life as a faculty , the taste that i have developed to authors like Jayakanthan, Thi Janagiraman, NA Parathasarathy , JK, etc all flowed from my two teachers at College Sri Jagannatha Chariar(Tamil) and sri K.Srinivasan
English).I still recall with agony and pleasure at the same time, when my professor of English did the last part of Antony and cleopatra, the death scene of cleopatra. The entire class was moved and in tears at that moment when he acted like cleopatra, and none of us could take lunch on that day. All of us skipped our lunch as no one was in a mood to go to lunch. And that was the day i recognised the greatness of true love.
Then when i moved in to the professional pursuit, Sri Sadagopan, a chartered accountant by profession, taught me the values about the profession and th need to maintain the highest clarity and integrity, backed with practical wisdom in issues of importance.
LATER WHEN I HAVE TAKEN BANKING AS MY CAREER THE ONE PERSON WHOM I SHOULD MAKE A reference to for all the guidance that he gave to me is Sri Ganesan, who made my career graph to ascend the way in which it is presently progressing.
That much about the teachers, i.e the manner in which the term is loosely understood by masses-then there are many more teachers, like a friend in need, a father's untold love, a mother's spoken love, a sweet heart's timely advise, the actions and words of near and dear, a son and a daughter, and even the opposition of an enemy ,events in society which revolve around you all these are great masters of life. And as my son succinctly put it the life itself is the greatest leveller and to that extent a great teacher too.
I dip my banner in acknowlegement to all those who have contributed directly and indirectly in so many ways for shaping my life.
