welcome to new financial year
Friday, April 1, 2011BEGIINING OF THE NEW FINANCIAL YEAR
HI ALL,
THERE WAS CELEBRATION AROUND, MUSIC IN AIR AND A SENCE OF UPLIFTMENT IN EVERY ONE, WHEN THE NEWS OF CROSSING BUSINESS MIX OF 250000 CRORES WAS ANNOUNCED.THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT A NEW FINANCIAL YEAR COULD NOT HAVE BEGUN ON A BETTER FOOTING.
THE FACT THAT THE ATTAINMENT CAME, IN MY TENTH YEAR OF MANAGING THE BALANCE SHEET WAS SWEET.AT THE SAME TIME, THE RECOGNITION THAT THIS IS GOING TO MY LAST ASSOCIATION WITH THE YEAR END BALANCE SHEET OF THE BANK (THIS BEING MY YEAR OF RETIREMENT) WAS ALWAYS OCCUPYING TEH BACK OF MY MIND.
THAT GAVE A MIXED FEELING WHICH I WAS NOT ABLE TO DECIPHER OR PINPOINT TILLNOW. I DECIDED TO SHARE MY FEELINGS ON THE EVE OF NEW FINANCIAL YEAR WITH MY FELLOW COLLEGUES THRU THE INTRA MAIL FACILITY AND THEN I WAS TAKEN BY SURPRISE BY THE OVERWHELMING AND HONEST RESPONSES RECEIVED BT ME.I AM JUST TABULATING A FEW OF THEM BELOW, NOT WITH A VIEW TO MAKE THIS BLOG " A SELF PRAISING " PLATFORM ,BUT TO ASSERT TO MY SELF THAT MY INNINGS SO FAR HAD REALLY WON ME A STREAM OF ADMIRERS,WELL WISHERS AND MOST OF THEM HAVE CHOSEN ME TO BE ROLE MODEL (possibly seeing the brighter side of me alone!!).
THE COMMENTS CAN BE SUMMED UP IN THREE CATEGORIES:
1.AN EXPRESSION OF SURPRISE AND DISBELIEF ON MY ANNOUNCEMENT ,THAT THIS IS GOING TO BE MY RETIREMENT YEAR.MOST OF THEM POINTED OUT THAT I DO NOT LOOK LIKE 60 AND AT BEST I CAN BE OF THE AGE OF 55 OR SO AND I AM JOKING .
2.THERE WERE WISHES TO THE EFFECT THAT RETIREMENT AGE BE INCREASED SO THAT I BECOME ELEVATED AS GM AND RETIRE AS GM.
3.THIRD CATEGORY WHO ACCEPTED THE FACT THAT I AM DUE FOR RETIREMENT, EXPRESSING CONFIDENCE THAT I WILL BE RETIANED BY THE BANK FOR MY EXPERTISE OF BALANCESHEET MANAGEMENT (IS THERE ONE SUCH !!) AND FOR TAKING FORWARD IFRS IMPLEMENTATION IN DAYS TO COME.
ON GOING THRU THE VARIOUS CATEGORIES OF RESPONSE, I WAS ABLE TO PIN POINT MY FEELINGS MORE PRECISELY. IT WAS A FEELING OF GRATITUDE AND GREATFULNESS BUNDLED INTO ONE, MARKED HOWEVER BY A TINGE OF SORROW.GRATITUDE TO THE INSTITURION WHICH HAS MADE ME WHAT I AM TODAY (THOUGH THERE COULD BE WISH FUL THINKING TAHT IT OUGHT TO BE MUCH MORE BETTER), GRATEFULNESS TO COLLEGUES AND SUPERIORS WHO HAD PUT UP WITH ME (DESPITE ALL MY TANTRUMS, OUTBIRSTS ETC SEEING ONLY THE POSITIVE SIDE IN ME) AND TINGE OF SORROW BECAUSE I AM DESTINED TO BID FARE WELL THIS YEAR TO ALL GOOD THINGS AROUND.
THE TRAVEL WAS LONG.CHALLENGES FACED WERE MANY. LIMITATIONS CROSSED WERE COUNTLESS.FROM A MEAGRE PROFIT OF AROUND RS 42 CRORES (WHEN I ENTERED THE BALANCE SHEET DEPARTMENT A DECADE BACK) THE PROFITS SURGED TO 4 FIGURES IN 2007.A REMARKABLE ATTAINMENT. THEN FOLLOWED A PERIOD OF CONSOLIDATION AND AGAIN THE BUSINESS MIX CROSSED 250000 CRORES BY 31/3/2011.NO DOUBT A TIME TO REJOICE.THE FACT THAT WE CROSSED MANY HURDLES IN THIS JOURNEY AND SOME OF THEM MAY NOT EVEN BE KNOWN TO EVEN TO PEOPLE WHO MATTER, BUT HAD BEEN SILENTLY HANDLED AND CONQURED AT OUR LEVELS ITSELF ADD DIGNITY TO OUR ROLE FUNCTIONS.I COULD NOT BUT RECALL MYDEAR FRIEND JANARDHANA REDDY AT THIS POINT OF TIME WHO WAS WITH ME IN THIS JOURNEY FOR ALLMOST 6 YEARS WHEN WE STOOD SHOULDER TO SHOULDER IN TACKLING EVERY ISSUE WHICH WE CAME BY.SPECIAL CREDITS ALSO TO RS,SV,KR,P AND AR WHO IN THIER OWN WAY MADE THE WORKING ATMOSHERE INTERESTING AND LIVELY.
I NOW MOVE ON WITH CONTENTMENT, A SENCE OF SATISFACTION AND A PRIDE IN HAVING ACHIEVED WHAT I WANTED TO ACHIEVE. I HAVE LEARNT NOT TO GAUGE MY WORK WITH THE REWARDS WHAT I GOT, BUT BY SELF INTROSPECTION AND SELF APPRAISAL AND THAT LEAVES ME WITH A DISTINCT SENCE OF PEACE AND SOLITUDE.
THANKS AND REGARDS TO ALL THOSE MADE IT POSSIBLE INCLUDING SUPERIORS WHOSE WARMTH AND AFFECTION I ENJOYED IN PLENTY.

Guess the guest of honour
TO SOME ONE DEAR
This post is delayed at least by a fortnight. My feelings for the same. However it is always better to be late than never and hence the post. And I post it at this time to co inside with another mile stone, touched upon later in the blog.
It all happened two and half decades back. The child who had not yet come out of the warmth of bosom of mother has to be removed (of course with no force at all which till date remains to be a mystery. as there had been no cry, no tears what so ever) by the grand father to accommodate the expected arrival of the younger sibling.
The child shifted to another shoulder shortly after words and the person who lent the shoulder did not know then that the child is going to be the best of friends to him in the years to come.
Then the time for admission to school. Both father and mother of the child with anxiety written all over their face wait at the school to ensure that the child is free of all worries and settles down fast. To their surprise, the child gets out of the two wheeler steps in to the school walks over to the identified teacher and that is all. No turning back, no flying kisses, no “ tata –bye bye” to the waiting parents. It was a moment of mixed feelings for the parents. They did not know that it is an indication of the child’s response that is going to be not only at that moment but also in times to come. By the time the schooling is over the child has proved that there is an uniqueness, around, which can only be watched and appreciated and nothing could be done to tamper with it.
Then comes the college. The child (now growing into an adult) is allowed freedom to choose. A choice is made. Soon it was thought to be a wrong choice and next choice is exercised. Even this proves to be wrong in no time. But there is no question of giving it up easily. There are two unspelt reasons for the same. One is to try till it is proved other wise and the other is to reduce the agony of those who matter. Finally, when it comes to the question of bursting out, the third choice is made. And it is certain by now that the choice has to succeed. There is a vision and there is a promise within and an unspoken commitment to the outside world, to the persons who matter.
VISION, COMMITMENT AND PLAN OF ACTION, when they converge, the result ought to be an astounding success.
That is precisely what happened. At the end of the academics, (a chequerd one at that) to come out in flying colors by topping the list and winning the gold medal is no ordinary feat. But the same was achieved with out batting an eyelid, and the art, of treating the success on par with failure and not to be either jubilant or desolate, was given a fine perfection in those moments.
There was immediately an opening by way of campus placement. That too in one of the most popular IT companies, very near to the place of residence. But the fire to prove (or is it the desire and passion to excel!) was still alive within. And that paved the way for entry into one of the most prestigious institutions offering the best of courses on language of sciences. Some one said that when times become tough, the toughest gets going. The going started then and goes on till now.
I had an opportunity of going thru the glimpses in the life of Ravindranath Tagore thru, a presentation on wheels (By Northern Railway) when I was awaiting at Kalka station for onward journey to Delhi. The life of TAGORE, the advent of Shanthi Niketan, the great works of Tagore and the Nobel prize conferred on him all proved one point. Genius within one person will come to the forefront not withstanding the limitations within which they are confined. Just thought it fit to share at this juncture.
Continuing from where I transgressed a bit, institution recognized the talent and gave an outstanding rating. And the two years stint saw the friendship growing after a gap, thanks to the transfers, which made life to be lead to gether. Perfect harmony, perfect demarcation, perfect understandingJ. However life, unless the surprise element is there will become dull and dreary, is it not.J.and the surprise element came..
It was not known at the time when it struck. It was almost like a lightning; after it struck, it makes you go blind (in a literal sense) for a few moments. Moments in this case happen to be almost more than 12 months. And what a period it was, one, which challenged the inner reserves, one that raised several questions on life, relationship and survival. It was clearly known (though not then, but in retrospect now) that it was another experience intended to leave one stronger and merrier after the initial onslaught.
’Puyalukku pinne amaithi, varum puyalukku mun varum oru pathi”.
The transformation that followed was something amazing, remarkable and unparalleled. And the transformation resulted in culmination of completion of one of the most brilliant and detailed thesis on a subject, (which few people dare to tread upon) in a record time and the fact remained that not with standing the Guru’s blessings (Which no doubt is a must in such pursuits), there was a hidden potential, of which possibly a fraction alone has been unearthed so far.
A shy child, an introvert, slowly getting converted in to a matured adult and an extrovertJ. A face portraying signs of stress and strain, giving rise to a face with a knowing /reassuring smile, a temperament which always used to be friendly and warm evolving into one of empathy and reassurance…The list is endless.
A seed , shouldered two and half decades back with out any expectation, has repaid with its cool shades , by growing into a banyan tree. Thank you my dear friend son. It is the best that I can give you , belatedly on your birth day.(at the point of time when you are going to complete your 100 days stint at Hongkong(on 27th MARCH 2011), on another one of your favourite pursuits.
Hip hip hurray, may you go from strngth to strength and may there be calm , quiet and peace all around you and to you in plenty.
PS. And belated greetings to one another friend “R” too who shares the birthday with my son

THI JANAGIRAMAN...LIFE REVISITED
I look back in awe the years that i have traversed, the challnges that i have faced and the mile stones that i have crossed. And though i would not like to make any comparison at any levels(based on wisdom gained in late forties) still in the heart of hearts , a silent comparison goes on. Your self with your peers, yourself with your superiors and last but not the least your self with your enemies!Hold a moment. At this age and experience i do not want to call any one as my enemy as life has tuaght me that more we are against some one it would onley mean our own inner hurt and injuries and hence better to give them a decent burial and move on.
And coming to talk about the internal hurt and injuries, obviusly one can not miss the external hurt and injuries. And ofcourse the internal hurt (i mean those relating to heart and mind)is a silent killer while the external hurt and injuries(obvious ref is to the phusical well being)are some thing and at most of the times are mangageble by your own lelf with little or nil outside help. Still when the outside atmosphere is one wherein your hurt and pain , whether internal or external, are shared and understood the recovery becomes faster.
My reference is to the none too serious hurt (in retrospect) which i sustained by tripping and falling on a rainy day near the footsteps of my house, resulting in a blood stained shirt and a few deep cuts just above the left eye.And the result is this post and few days of compelled rest and recuperation.
The challenge which i made a reference to in the earlier part of the post and the comparison i drew are with reference to my long innings(32 BALANCE SHEETS.NOT OUT)as an executive of a nationalised bank. After what appeared to be a dream come true of finalisation of accounts, atleast a week before its approval and in really relaxed setting,(possibly letting caution go to the wind, and in that split second, the tripping and falling all at the same moment) , brought back the basic lesson. Be conscious even when you relax. And that resulted in understanding what is happening all around at a more surfaceous level. And it also helped in knowing how much people care and respond to your problems and worries. And with each such sharing the pain eased and with each such inward mail the recovery is becoming faster. Thanks to every one of them who cared...And very often in life, it is this little caring , shown at the appropriate time that can do wonders to the outside world .Let us practice it at every moment as if it is a "THAPAS". More importantly it enabled me to move towards some of my child hood goals , which as an adult i have started attending to with some regular consistency in the recent past.
The goal which i mentioned has got nothing to do with career or ambitions. AS i mentioned once, my pain and my happiness , i know are bound to come and go in circles and i know that it is important to treat them alike to reach the level of utmost inner peace, I feel at times this recognition it self is as good as reaching the goal itself.Still the goal or rather the apt word is the dream, which i have accomplished in these days of compelled rest is to visit the Short story collection of Thi Janagiraman.I have finished almost 800 pages of his book in a span of little over two days and the more i read, the more i feel better and better,Few authors and their writings can have such a beautiful influence on you.
The fact that THI.JA.RA, belongs to the very same soil to which i belong ,(Tanjore) is besides the point. The fact to be appreciated is that once you are with the stories you feel as if you are revisiting your birth place, experiencing the experienc of each character therein and more importantly understanding the subtle messages that are thrown in plenty, in between the lines.Just as variety flowers and their fragrance his characters portray the strength, weakness, success and fall of the human beings .The characters are those whom you meet day in and day out. They belong to you or rather you are what has been portrayed in various shades thru these chracters. And once you finish reading teh same, you hve an immense experience, serene peace within and a charm which lingers within as if it is born along with you.
YES. SOME ONE SAID THAT BEST FRIENDS ARE BOOKS.THI JA RA PROVES THAT POINT .
And the recovery from the accident becomes faster, when you start reading a book like that, when the thick clouds and the drizzle in the sky make a beautiful back drop to the settings. All are possibly intended to make the lesson clear, the life merrier and the experience stronger.
At the nd of it the comparisons vanish, the enmity is overtaken by friendship, love , pure love rules the golden moments.
with that great feeling i sign off,
